Want To Step Out Of Your Food And Body Struggles For Good? It's Time To Get Into Your Body

If you have been here for awhile, you have maybe learned quite a lot about satiation and being a Somatic Eater. Intellectually understanding why you reach for food or judge your body can only take you so far on your healing path.

Today, I would like to land some of what you have learned in your body. So, wherever you are, find a comfortable seat either cross legged on the floor or sitting with both feet firmly on the ground in a chair. If you're listening to this on a walk or driving around in the car, you can absolutely have this somatic experience where you are and perhaps come back and re-listen to this episode when you have a moment to slow down and be just with your body.

Close your eyes or have a soft gaze in front of you.

Let's first start with taking a few deep breaths together. Inhale 1, 2, 3, 4 and then exhale 1, 2, 3, 4. Again, inhale 1, 2, 3, 4 and then exhale 1, 2, 3, 4. One more time, inhale 1, 2, 3, 4 and then open mouth exhale 1, 2, 3, 4. No matter what we are going to explore today, remember you can come back to your breathe, come back to this moment. You are safe right here and right now exactly where you are.

I want you to now think of the last food you chose to emotionally self soothe when there were no signs of physical hunger present. Or, the last harsh critical thing you said to your body. Notice the sensations that arise in your body just thinking about this experience. There is no right or wrong way to feel. Without interpreting your sensations, just notice what is present. Where do the most intense sensations show up? Are they in your chest or your belly or your head? Describe the sensations to yourself. Notice the temperature, the texture, and intensity. Is it hot or cold? Is it jagged or smooth feeling? Is it like a tidal wave or a babbling brook? Observe how it increases and decreases as you sit and observe these sensations. They are not consistent.

Now get curious if these sensations have been connected to an emotion or a memory.

Do these sensations feel familiar? If so, when is the first time you could remember feeling this way? How old were you? What were you really wanting and desiring in that moment emotionally? Is there an emotion that you usually label these sensations as? What emotion might be wanting your attention and presence?

Your sensations are guiding you. If you shove them down or numb out to them with food or picking on the body as it is now, you miss discovering how these sensations are revealing to you what your body is still holding onto, wounds that are still being processed, emotions wanting to be moved through you, and what emotional hungers are looking for satiation in non-food and non-body image ways. Take a few deep breaths here. If you tapped into a part of you, maybe a younger part of you that is feeling perhaps scared or hurt, tell them what they need to hear right now. If you tuned into an emotion that has been sitting in your gut waiting to be digested and assimilated, thank that emotion for showing up.

There is nothing you need to DO with any piece of awareness you cultivated.

You can sit with this awareness for as long as you need to. Awareness can be a catalyst for change. You get to trust your process and today was just the first step of getting out of the mind's stories and getting into your body to discover what wisdom your body is trying to send you. Whenever you feel ready, slowly open your eyes. Take in the room around you. Describe your environment, Again, right here and right now in this moment you are safe.
